Martial Arts Marketing Mistakes Only Sheep Make

June 06, 20253 min read

There’s a quote I think about often:

“A lion doesn’t lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.”

It’s simple, but powerful. And for me, it’s more than just a nice phrase to post on social media — it’s a daily reminder to stay focused, stay confident, and not be distracted by the noise around me.

So, what does this have to do with running a martial arts club? Actually… quite a lot.

Don’t Let the Herd Steer Your Club’s Future

This quote is what helps me keep my eyes on the target. It’s what stops me from making a sharp U-turn every time something new flashes past in the world of marketing. If I allowed every trend, every piece of unsolicited advice, and every “next big thing” to sway me, I’d never make any real progress — and neither would the clubs we work with.

In my world, the latest shiny object right now is artificial intelligence — AI-powered chatbots, AI-generated scripts, AI-everything.

If I did that, I’d risk leading the 40 clubs we work with straight into a “new member drought.”

Recently, I shared something very different — a dead-simple, almost laughably basic method that’s been getting the clubs we work with 34.05% more of their enquiries to actually turn into trial classes on the mat. No AI gimmicks. No cartoon ads. No chasing the latest fad.

If you missed that post, it’s worth reading. But here’s the truth… I didn’t just send it to my clients. I also sent it to other club owners — including the ones who, for whatever reason, probably will never work with us.

Why?

Because sometimes, as the lion, you share a recent “kill” just to show what’s possible.

And that brings me back to the quote: “A lion doesn’t lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.”

You’re the lion in your own martial arts school. There are certain jobs you shouldn’t be doing as the lion. One of them is chasing leads, doing follow-ups, and constantly trying to keep your club’s marketing running.

Your job is to take care of your pride when they’re already inside your four walls — to develop your students, strengthen them, guide them, and keep them moving forward.

My job is to bring new members into your Pride Land. That’s all I do.

We’ve built a marketing system for martial art clubs that handles everything before someone steps through your door: the advertising, the conversations, the follow-ups, the reminders — all of it. When they arrive at your club, you just welcome them in.

Now here’s the reality — if you tried to do all of that yourself, it would take thousands of hours to learn, test, roll out, and then manage itevery single day from early morning to late at night. The cost in time, effort, and cash would be far greater than the fee we charge to do it for you — and to be blunt, we’d still do it better.

Not because we’re magical, but because this is literally the only thing we do. We have an unfair advantage: total focus.

That’s also why I don’t follow along when I see other marketing agencies running AI-generated cartoon ads for martial arts classes. I know those tactics don’t perform for real schools in the real world. I don’t care if it’s “trendy” — I care if it works.

We keep the pride fed and safe by sticking to what actually brings in members, not by chasing every fad that comes along.

And here’s the final thing…

Every Lion Needs a Hunting Partner

You are the alpha lion of your pride. And like any good leader, you’ll get stronger when you work with other lions. You probably don’t manufacture your own uniforms. You probably don’t mould the mouth guards yourself. So why would you try to hunt new members without teaming up with someone who only does that, day in and day out?

If you need more pride members — and you want a fellow lion to do the hunting — I’d love to be the one. Watch this video here, hear how we do it.
